On July 3, 2018, a meeting with the delegation of the Ministry of Defense of Japan took place at the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies (KAZISS) under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The Director-General for International Affairs of the Bureau of Defense Policy of the Ministry of Defense of Japan Osamu Izawa, Defense Official of the International Policy Division of the Bureau of Defense Policy at the Ministry of Defense of Japan Kenji Matsuura, Military Attache of the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Kazakhstan Takeshi Toyoda, Сlerk of the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Kazakhstan Akbota Amirbek attended the meeting.
The KAZISS`s experts: Deputy Director Sanat Kushkumbayev, Secretary for Academic and Research Affairs Каzbek Issayev, Research Fellows of the International Studies Department Kymbat Nurgaliyeva and Temirlan Eskendir participated in the event.
The Director-General for International Affairs of the Bureau of Defense Policy at the Ministry of Defense of Japan Osamu Izawa noted that the purpose of the visit of the Japanese delegation to Kazakhstan is to conduct interdepartmental consultations at the bilateral level. Kazakhstan's strategic importance in Central Asia on defense and military cooperation was emphasized.
In turn, the Deputy Director of KAZISS Sanat Kushkumbayev highlighted the key directions of the multi-vector foreign policy of Kazakhstan, and stressed the importance of the projects of Japan being implemented in the field of development support and environmental security provision.
During the meeting, the state and prospects of the Kazakhstan-Japan relations, as well as the positions of the countries on topical issues of the international agenda, in particular, security provision at the international and regional level, prospects for the «Belt and Road» Initiative of China, the situation in the Northeast Asia, the North Korean nuclear problem were discussed. Special attention was paid to the foreign policy of Russia, China, the United States and the European Union.
At the same time, the participants noted the similarity of views of Astana and Tokyo on many international and regional issues including conflict resolution, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and global security provision.
As a result of the meeting, the experts confirmed their commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership of Kazakhstan and Japan at all levels.
