On 7th of December, Astana hosted the international conference "Family and gender policy of Kazakhstan: achievements and prospects", dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the National Commission for women and family and demographic policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan with the participation of the Secretary of state, Chairman of the National Commission for women and family and demographic policy under the President of Kazakhstan Gulshara Abdykalikova.
Opening the international conference, the Secretary of state stressed the words of President N.Nazarbayev said that the women of Kazakhstan played a big role in the formation and strengthening of the Independence of our country. Welcoming the participants of the conference G.Abdykalikova said «one of the important priorities of the state policy of Kazakhstan is the protection of motherhood and childhood, the empowerment of women. Summing up the results of the 20-year activity of the National Commission for women and family and demographic policy under the President of Kazakhstan, it should be emphasized that our country has made significant progress in promoting the interests of women, family and gender equality». The Secretary of state noted that a legislative institutional framework had been established during that time. Thus, in 1995, Kazakhstan signed the Beijing Declaration and platform for action on the empowerment of women. Fundamental initiatives and instruments were then ratified. In 1998, it had acceded to the Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women. Also, in 2015 to the UN Declaration «Transforming our world» of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. The strategy of gender equality was implemented, gender-oriented laws «on state guarantees of equal rights and equal opportunities of men and women», «on prevention of domestic violence» were adopted. The Concept of family and gender policy in Kazakhstan until 2030 is being implemented. All bodies have identified those responsible for the implementation of gender policy. A youth and family Committee has recently been established. The field work of the regional Commission on women's issues. Also in her speech, the Chairman of the National Commission focused on the issues of promotion and progress of the representation of Kazakh women in politics. «Today, 22% of the total number of deputies or 34 women are parliamentarians, while at the end of the 2011 election there were 29 or 19%. The share of women in maslikhat at all levels is also 22%, and in Kostanay region it exceeds 30%. Women's representation in political parties ranges from 33 to 57%. About 55% of women work in the public service and more than 10 per cent of political civil servants. Non-governmental organizations play an important role in social and political life. In Kazakhstan, about 300 NGOs are actively involved in the empowerment of women. Among them I want to mention the Union of women entrepreneurs, the Association of business women, the Council of business women and many others». Also today, more than 500 thousand SMB companies are headed by women.
The conference was attended by members of the National Commission on women and family and demographic policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, members of Parliament, heads of state bodies, representatives of the diplomatic corps, international organizations, delegates from all regions, representing the National commissions under the Akims of the regions and Astana, Almaty, Shymkent, women's non-governmental organizations, business.
The conference featured a video greeting from the Executive Director the structure of «UN Women», the Deputy Secretary-General of the UN Phumzile Mlambo-Ngkuka, and welcome speeches were delivered by the UN resident Coordinator in the Republic of Kazakhstan Norimasa Shimomura, head of the Office of programs in Astana Derd Sabo, the Representative structure of "UN women" in Kazakhstan Elaine Konkiyevich, Director, Head of the European Bank for reconstruction and development in the Republic of Kazakhstan Agris Preimanis, Deputy Managing Director, Eurasia business unit Chevron Balaji Krishnamurthy.

Director of KazISS under the President of Kazakhstan Zarema Shaukenova is a member of the National Commission under the President of Kazakhstan since 2008. On the eve of the conference was published a special issue of the magazine "Otbasym", dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the National Commission, which published an article Shaukenova Z.K. «Partnership for peace. Women and peacekeeping».
Today, the women's community of Kazakhstan faces the main tasks: to actively participate in the implementation of the Strategy "Kazakhstan-2050", the achievement of sustainable development Goals until 2030, the implementation of indicators of the Concept of family and gender policy until 2030. New ideas, ideas and proposals put forward at the conference will be used in the future work of the National Commission.
