Towards the Future: from Modernization of Land towards Modernization of the People

On July 5, the Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of Kazakhstan jointly with the Institute of Philosophy, Political and Religious Studies of the Ministry of Education and Science held an expert discussion "Towards the Future: from Modernization of Land towards Modernization of the People".

Marking the jubilee of Astana, the experts recognized that it had become the symbol of the independent Kazakhstan. Astana is a city as a living organism where the natural and the urban, the technological and the human are successfully balanced. The changing environment gave Astana the impetus to the positive development making its inhabitants considerably more content with their living conditions. Today, the international image of Astana is being strengthened as it hosts EXPO-2017.

However, in his article "Bolashakka Baghdar: Rukhani Zhangyru" President Nazarbayev, having acknowledged Kazakhstan’s modernization during the 20th century, set a much more ambitious goal to implement “the modernization not of the land but of the mind" and to build a united nation of resilient and responsible people.

The discussion, moderated by the directors Zarema Shaukenova and Akhan Bizhanov, covered the prerequisites, opportunities and obstacles for a new mentality that would be based on the territorial, social, political, demographic, economic and cultural development of the largest cities of Kazakhstan including its current and former capitals.

The event was attended by the experts in urban issues and those of political science, namely the Chairman of Almaty Public Council Rakhman Alshanov, Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Philosophy, Political and Religious Studies Raushan Sartaeva and the Head of the Institute’s Political Analysis Department Mukhtarbek Shaikemelev, Professor Magbat Spanov, Member of the Cross-Border Cooperation Association Marat Shibutov, architect Kuralai Ibragimova, Elena Sadovskaya, KazISS Chief Research Fellows Irina Chernykh, Yuri Buluktaev, Konstantin Syroezhkin and the others.
