On 2nd of July, 2018 the meeting of the expert group«Contribution of civil society to the development of Astana» dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the capital on the theme was held. Organizer of the meeting is Ministry of Social Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Representatives of government bodies, political parties, research organizations and civil society institutions participated the meeting.
Research Fellow at the Department of Social and Political Studies Gulnaz Kassimova and Research Fellow at the Department of Social and Economic Analysis Bekzhan Sadykov of KazISS under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan attended the event.
Vice-Minister of Social Development of Kazakhstan A.N. Nukenov welcomed participants and noted importance and role of Astana in the construction of civil society, which is an example of effective interaction of NGOs and state bodies.
Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions of the Republic of Kazakhstan E.B. Sairov indicated that Astana has an integrating force, especially among young people. The city is a brand, a unique project that has become a "symbol of the social landscape of an independent country". Positive results are projects like "smart city", a digitalization program that directly affects the rest of the country.
In addition, experts noted that the number of projects implemented by NGOs exceeded the 500 mark. There are many non-commercial organizations operating in Astana that have a direct impact on civil society.
President of the NGO "Ardager" B.T. Akhmetzharova noted the need to closer interaction not only between NGOs and state bodies, but also directly between non-profit organizations, what will positively affect the effectiveness of their work.
The representative of the NAO " Civil Initiatives Support Center (CISC)" noted that Astana is one of the most active regions and number of projects being implemented increases every year.
Director of Decenta Public Foundation S.N. Gulyaev announced that 1790 NGOs are registered in Kazakhstan, only 242 of them work actively. Most of the existing non-profit organizations have a social aspect as the protection of citizens' rights, youth problems, gender issues, ecology, charity and other relevant topics.
In conclusion, the experts gave recommendations and proposals on the audit of existing NGOs and simplification of the process of liquidation of non-functioning NGOs.
