Round-table “Future begins in classrooms”

The round-table “Future begins in classrooms” dedicated to implementation of the project “New Humanitarian Knowledge. 100 New Kazakh Textbooks Project” was held in Almaty on May 5, 2018. Hosts of the venue are Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and Association of Sociologists of Kazakhstan.

Director of the KazISS under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Z. K. Shaukenova, member of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, vice-president of Association of Sociologists of Kazakhstan S. T. Seidumanov, vice-principal on social development of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Sh. Ye. Dzhamanbalayeva welcomed the participants of the round-table.

Head of the department of information and analytical work A. K. Nazarbetova, chief research workers I. A. Chernykh, L. R. Karatayeva and senior associate G. I. Mukhatayeva and the faculty of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University took part in the work of the round-table from the KazISS under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Z. K. Shaukenova, in her welcome speech, noted the important role of the working team, the teachers of higher education institutions of the country, including faculty of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and National Translation Agency, whose activity became subject of great pride. All of them became witnesses and participants of implementation of one of six programmes, the project “New Humanitarian Knowledge. 100 New Kazakh Textbooks Project” within a year after publication of the President`s policy article “Course towards the future: modernization of Kazakhstan’s identity”. The head of state together with translators and editors of Kazakh publications took part in presentation of 18 translated world textbooks, 6 of which were translated by Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Vice-President of Association of Sociologists of Kazakhstan S. T. Seidumanov, delivering his welcome speech, spoke about the expected positive effect of the project on translation of scientific publications, which will be strengthening of the Kazakh language in science, appearance of new specialties and new cohort of scientists. According to vice principal of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Sh. E. Dzhamanbalayeva, program “Ruhani zhangyru” gave a fresh impetus to modern education, and the project “100 textbooks” became an important mechanism for acquiring of new knowledge and building in global trend - UN program “Global Education in the area of citizenship” (GCED ). She noted that translated textbooks are introduced into educational process on departments of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and online courses are being developed by them.

Head of the project office “Ruhani zhangyru” of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, science editor of the Kazakh edition and translator of Klaus Schwab's book “The Fourth Industrial Revolution”, K. S. Matyzhanov spoke about the work on translation of six books, arrived to the project office. According to the speaker, difficulties occurred during translation of terms, including those contained in the title of Klaus Schwab’s scientific work, it sounds like “Tortinshi industriyalyk revolyutciya” in the Kazakh edition. The working team faced a problem of literary editing for transfer of unique style of works as well. According to K. S. Matyzhanov, the main message of the book “The Fourth Industrial Revolution” is the necessity to preserve spirituality, humanity in the era of digitalization and technology breakthrough.

Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, responsible editor of Kazakh edition of George Rietzer's book “Contemporary Sociological Theories” G. S. Abdirayimova noted that translation of the textbook took a long time and passed more than one scientific and language editing, the last was driven by the desire to preserve accuracy of transfer of linguistic signs from one cultural mentality to another and to preserve the value of the original text. Translated textbooks on sociology were introduced into standard educational programmes, and now the department shall develop new tools and methods for deeper study and understanding of modern processes by students. In addition, the work on the draft of new textbooks became a catalyst for development of polyglot dictionary of sociological terms.

Head of Philosophy Department of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, science editor and translator of D. Johnston's book “A Brief History of Philosophy: From Socrates to Derrida” G. Zh. Nurysheva considers that inception of idea and implementation of the project on translation of the world scientific works is evidence of increase in the public's self-awareness. At the same time, translator felt great responsibility to young generation and the head of state during the work. And the speech ended with kind words of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev towards working group during presentation of the project “New Humanitarian Knowledge. 100 New Kazakh Textbooks Project”. According to G. Zh. Nurysheva, D. Johnston's work is distinguished by brevity and simplicity of presentation. Brevity of presentation is observed in works of representatives of “Alash” movement and Kazakhstani scientists shall return to this style.

Head of the Department of Economics of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, executive editor and translator of the book of Gregory Menkiw, Mark P. Taylor “Economics”, G. A. Sadykhanova saw value of the book in wealth of theoretical and practical materials. Economic schools are listed and modern processes are reflected in the book translated into 25 languages of the world, which makes possible to compare domestic economic model with the world samples. Structure of the textbook containing issues and cases for independent work is very useful for teacher and can be used in individual work with students. Textbook of G. Menkiw and M. Taylor “Economics” is already applied during teaching of disciplines “Fundamentals and Principles of Economics”, “Economic Theory”, “Microeconomics” and “Macroeconomics” for faculties with the Kazakh language of study on all levels – from undergraduate to postgraduate studies.

Professor of the Department of General and Applied Psychology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, scientific editor and translator of Elliot Aronson's book “The social animal. Introduction to Social Psychology” D. D. Duysenbekov said that Russian version of the book was considered during the work, but given that the last edition of the book was translated and there is no its analogue in Russian, translation was performed from the original. According to D. D. Duysenbekov, the message of the book is devoted to human sociality, its avoidance of loneliness.

Head of the Department of Religion Studies and Cultural Studies of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, scientific editor of Kazakh edition of Alan Barnard's book “History and theory in anthropology” A. D. Kurmanaliyeva pointed out the key role of the programme “Ruhani zhangyru” in patronage of young scientists and importance of attention accentuation in humanitarian science. New scientific terms were developed during translation, which allowed improvement of quality of education and bring it closer to modern world standards. The speaker considers historical responsibility before future generations as the most difficult in performed work.

Summarizing results of the event, director of the KazISS under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Z. K. Shaukenova appealed to the faculty to make the colleagues of their departments become associates in formation of renewed quality education on the basis of 18 translated best textbooks of the world humanitarian science.
