On March 31, 2017, the KazISS delegation headed by Director Zarema Shaukenova visited the Residence of Ambassador of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. Ichira Kawabata, at his personal invitation. The event was also attended by Deputy Ambassador of Japan to Kazakhstan Yasumasa Iijima, Third Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Kazakhstan Satoru Takanasi, Acting. Deputy Director of KazISS Kazbek Issaev, and Chief Research Fellow Alua Zholdybalina.
The two parties discussed the prospects for expanding of contacts with leading Japanese analytical institutions and think tanks during the forthcoming visit of the KazISS delegation to Japan to participate in the Global Think Tank Summit IV in May, 2017.
The discussion touched upon the cooperation with particular institutions, namely the Japan Institute of International Relations under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (JIIA), National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), research centers of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, University of Tokyo, and Nippon Foundation.
This long-term and effective cooperation with research institutes of Japan is being established in accordance with the Joint Statement of Kazakhstan and Japan "On Enhanced Scholarly Partnership in the Age of Rise of Asia" signed during the official visit of the President Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan to Japan on November 6-9, 2016. The document emphasizes the importance of international cooperation of the KazISS with similar institutions of Japan.
