On December 6, 2019, a seminar on public diplomacy «Peace and unification of the Korean peninsula: the experience of Kazakhstan» was held in Nur-Sultan. The organizer was the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The purpose of the seminar, which was attended by representatives of state bodies, as well as representatives of the Association of Koreans of Kazakhstan, was to search for mechanisms and tools to achieve peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.
The event was attended by deputy director of KazISS Sanat Kushkumbayev, who made a report «Problems of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula: a view from Kazakhstan». In his speech, S. Kushkumbayev stressed the need to resolve the Korean issue by peaceful means.
Kazakhstan, as a state that voluntarily renounced its nuclear arsenal, offers a negotiating platform for interested parties. In the situation with the Korean peninsula, in order to establish sustainable peace and establish relations, both on a bilateral and multilateral basis, it is necessary for the world community (especially the UN Security Council) to provide guarantees for the security of the DPRK, the creation of a specific mechanism for denuclearization, framed in the catalogue of confidence-building measures between the two Koreas.
For its part, Kazakhstan is committed to the negotiation process and is ready to provide all possible assistance for the peaceful settlement of the DPRK nuclear issue and the development of inter-Korean relations in order to strengthen peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, including through the use of international instruments, such as the dialogue platform of the Conference on confidence-building measures and interaction in Asia (CICA).
