On February 6, 2020 Nazarbayev University hosted the presentation of the global and national reports of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on human development.
The 2019 Human Development Report (HDR), entitled «Beyond income, beyond averages, beyond today: inequalities in human development in the 21st Century» was presented by Pedro Conseição, the Director of the Human Development Office at UNDP Headquarters. The Report provides a ranking of countries by 2018 Human Development Index (HDI) value. Kazakhstan was ranked 50th out of 189 countries and joined the group of countries with very high human development.
Moreover, according to the authors, in the context of climate change and technological breakthroughs, the crucial importance has the development of measures to further reduce all forms of inequality and ensure the sustainability of economic growth. (см. доклад здесь)
The national report on human development «Urbanization as an Accelerator of Inclusive and Sustainable Development in Kazakhstan», offers recommendations for transforming approaches to urban development policies and programs. Thus, experts identified the need to monitor the quality and affordability of housing, support the urban economy, as well as the importance of differentiating priorities for growing and shrinking cities as the main strategic directions. The main results of the National Report were presented by Elena Danilova-Cross, the Program Specialist on Poverty and Inequality of the UNDP Regional Office in Istanbul, and international experts Maria Carriroza and Lena Simet.
The meeting was also addressed by the President of Nazarbayev University Shigeo Katsu, UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Kazakhstan Yakup Berish, the Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Astana Civil Service Hub Alikhan Baimenov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerzhan Ashikbayev, the Vice Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan Akmadi Sarbasov, the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Kazakhstan Elvira Azimova, the Chairman of the Board of the ALE "the Association of Environmental Organizations of Kazakhstan" Aigul Solovyova.
Representatives of state bodies, NGOs, international organizations, Kazakhstani scientific and expert communities took part in the discussion of the main conclusions and results of the reports. KazISS was represented by Anna Alshanskaya, senior research fellow at the Department of Social and Economic Studies.
