How the population feels about the idea of building nuclear power plants – survey results

On behalf of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a telephone survey was conducted from August 7 to August 18, 2024. The sample size comprised 1,200 respondents. The survey included participants aged 18 and older from 17 regions and the cities of national significance: Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent.

Overall, a majority of respondents (53.1%) support the idea of building nuclear power plants. Supporters link this idea with high expectations, including solving the problem of electricity shortages by 2030.

Opponents of nuclear power plants (32.5%) mainly fear possible accidents and their environmental consequences.

At the same time, nearly one in ten respondents (14.4%) are still undecided.

Additionally, half of the respondents (51.0%) feel that they have sufficient information and knowledge to vote in a referendum either “for” or “against” the construction of nuclear power plants. Another 12.2% admit to having fragmented information, 31.6% are not informed at all, and 5.2% were unable to provide an answer. During the survey, 42.6% of respondents expressed a firm intention to participate in a referendum on the issue of nuclear power plants if it takes place. Another 16.4% said they are likely to participate. 25.3% do not plan to take part in the referendum, 8.9% are unlikely to participate, and 6.8% were unsure.
