On September 20, 2024, a round table dedicated to topical issues of cooperation between Kazakhstan and Mongolia was held in the online format. The event was organized by the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (KazISS) and the Institute for Strategic Studies of the National Security Council of Mongolia (ISS) under the auspices of the Central Asian Forum on Security and Cooperation.
Welcoming remarks were delivered by Askar Nursha, Deputy Director of KazISS, and Bijin Khandsuren, Deputy Director of ISS.
“Kazakhstan and Mongolia share a long history of relations. The interactions between our countries and peoples have deep historical roots and are built on mutual respect and cultural closeness. I believe that, despite our geographical proximity, the bilateral potential has not been fully realized. It is time to find new and more effective ways to enhance this potential,” noted Askar Nursha.
“Kazakhstan is an important partner for Mongolia in Central Asia. Our country is located between two large neighboring countries—China and Russia. Today, we live in a rapidly changing world where competition among superpowers is intensifying. As a result, both Kazakhstan and Mongolia may face traditional and non-traditional security challenges. No country can overcome today’s challenges and threats alone. Therefore, all countries and peoples must work together to find ways to respond to these challenges and prevent confrontation through mutual understanding, cooperation, and development,” said Bijin Khandsuren.
The Mongolian side expressed confidence that the productive interaction between the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of Kazakhstan and the Institute for Strategic Studies of the National Security Council of Mongolia will contribute to the successful development of Kazakhstan-Mongolia cooperation in the future.
Common challenges and prospects for the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Mongolia were discussed during the sessions. Topics included strategic priorities in domestic and foreign policy, measures to develop trade and economic cooperation and the role of diasporas in strengthening interstate relations.
The event was also attended by representatives of the NJSC “Otandastar Fund”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National University of Mongolia, the University of Internal Affairs of Mongolia, as well as experts from KazISS and ISS.
The meeting became an important platform for exchange of views and development of joint decisions on key issues of bilateral cooperation.
It should be reminded that a Memorandum of Cooperation between KazISS and ISS was signed within the framework of the Central Asian Forum in 2023. This was the beginning of joint activities, research, exchange of works, scientific conferences and round tables on topics of mutual interest.
