Aigul Zabirova, Senior Research Fellow at the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (KazISS), participated in the joint conference of the European Society of Central Asian Studies (ESCAS) and the Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS), held under the theme “Geopolitics, Migration, and Identity” from January 7–11, 2025, in Lisbon, Portugal.
The event brought together over 320 participants from around the world, including leading scholars, experts, and researchers on Central Asia. The conference addressed pressing issues related to geopolitical challenges, migration processes, and questions of cultural identity.
Aigul Zabirova was a speaker in the session “Islam in Contemporary Central Eurasia,” where she presented the findings of her work on the project “Points of Convergence and Divergence with Islam in Pilgrimage Practices in Kazakhstan.” Her presentation analyzed the current state of pilgrimage practices in Kazakhstan and their interaction with Islamic traditions.
KazISS’s participation in such large-scale events underscores the significance of research conducted by Kazakhstani scholars on the international stage and contributes to strengthening academic ties between countries and regions.
