Dauren Abenuly Aben has been appointed Deputy Director of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (KazISS).
In his new position, Mr. Abenuly will coordinate the Institute’s analytical work on issues related to global processes, foreign policy, and international security.
Dauren Abenuly graduated from Kainar University with a degree in International Relations in 1997, where he also completed his master’s studies in 1999. In 2003, he earned a Master’s degree in International Policy Studies from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (USA). In 2011, he completed his doctoral studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
Over the years, he has held a number of responsible positions, including: Project Manager at the “Central Asian Project” Research Group (1997–2001); Program Coordinator and Executive Director of the Regional Office of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Almaty (2003–2009); Head of the Accreditation and Ranking Department at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (2008–2010); Senior Research Fellow and Acting Head of the Department of Foreign Policy and International Security at KazISS under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (2011–2014).
He has also worked as Senior Manager and Research Fellow at the Graduate School of Education of Nazarbayev University, and as Senior Research Fellow at the Eurasian Research Institute of the Khoja Akhmet Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University. Since February 2023, Dauren Abenuly has served as Head of the Department of International Security at KazISS under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Mr. Aben’s research interests include nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear security, and export control, as well as various aspects of regional security and cooperation in Central Asia and the Caucasus, which are reflected in a number of his scholarly publications.
