Prospects of cooperation between think tanks of Sweden and Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies

Swedish experience in scientific and economic fields is globally recognized. Kazakhstan actively collaborates with the European country: in 2023, the volume of mutual trade reached 467 million dollars, with over 620 million dollars of investments attracted from Sweden into the economy. More than 130 Kazakhstani students have been educated in Swedish universities under the “Bolashak” program.

Currently, intellectual cooperation between the two countries has deepened. In order to exchange experience in the scientific direction, the Kazakhstan Institute of Strategic Studies was visited by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Sweden to Kazakhstan, Ewa Polano, and the Deputy Director of the Department of Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peter Valind Godo. KazISS is considered by Swedish colleagues as a platform for dialogue where experts from other research organizations of the European Union can converge.

Meanwhile, Director of KazISS, Yerkin Tukumov, expressed a desire to establish contacts with the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the Stockholm School of Economics, and other leading think tanks.

It’s worth noting that SIPRI deals with the study of world issues and conflicts, primarily arms control and disarmament issues. Y. Tukumov noted that KazISS has established a department of international security that directly addresses these issues. Considering contemporary global trends, collaborative work in this direction is relevant for both countries.
