Widening the Scope. Expanding the horizons of international relations theory

The presentation of the book “Widening the Scope: How Middle Powers are Changing Liberal Institutionalism” was held on September 26, 2023 at Nazarbayev University. The event was organized by KazISS under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in cooperation with Nazarbayev University.

The event was attended by representatives of diplomatic, research and analytical circles. The monograph was presented in the year of the 30th anniversary of Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The author of the book is Miras Zhiyenbayev, the Lead Expert of KazISS, a specialist in international relations and political economy.

“Widening the Scope” is one of the first fundamental studies in Kazakhstan that expands the understanding of the role of middle powers in international relations. The book explains how governance at the “middle” level is organized in the world, how the middle powers deal with the world’s problems and how they cooperate with each other on the international arena.

The event was opened and moderated by Ainur Karbozova, Deputy Chairman of the Board at Maqsut Narikbayev University (KAZGUU). It should be noted that the foreword to the publication was written by Mr. Shigeo Katsu, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Founding President of Nazarbayev University, Advisor to the President, and former Vice President of the World Bank. During his speech at the event, he noted that the presentation of the book was an important event in the professional academic community of Kazakhstan.

The book was widely recognized by the international academic and expert community, having been presented for the first time at the first Central Asian Security and Cooperation Forum organized by KazISS on July 13-14.
